The airport was a training center for the U.S. Navy from 1940 to 1945; the service organization constructed a control tower and an additional runway.

Pensacola's airport was first served by Eastern Air Lines in 1947, and in 1952 a brand-new terminal took its place. Pensacola's former mayor, L.C. Hagler, was honored with a dedication to the airport. Eastern Airlines launched the first regular jet service out of Pensacola in 1968.

After the airline industry deregulation in 1978, several airlines, including Continental and Delta, began serving Pensacola. The first fatal airline accident in the area occurred in 1978 when a National Airlines Boeing 727 plunged into Escambia Bay on approach for landing. Pensacola welcomed U.S. Airways, formerly known as USAir, in 1979. The present terminal was established in 1990, and the jet service was introduced by AirTran Airways in 2001.

U.S.-based airline United Express launched its Pensacola hub in 2005. American Airlines (under the American Eagle brand) resumed service to Pensacola in 2004 after having discontinued it in the 1990s. After acquiring Airtran Airways in 2013, Southwest Airlines finally began flying to Pensacola. In 2018, Frontier Airlines began offering flights into and out of Pensacola.

On November 9, 2011, Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward officially changed the name of Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport to Pensacola International Airport.

Pensacola is the westernmost and only incorporated city in Escambia County, Florida, United States, and the county seat. Approximately 54,312 people called this place home as of the ten-year count conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2020.

Established in 1559, six years before St. Augustine's founding, Pensacola was the first Spanish settlement within the limits of the continental United States. However, residents fled the hurricane-ravaged town and didn't return until 1698.

The city of Pensacola serves as a port on Pensacola Bay, which opens into the Gulf of Mexico behind the barrier island of Santa Rosa. Near Warrington, to the southwest of Pensacola, is the country's first United States Naval Air Station.

This is where the Blue Angels flight demonstration team calls home, and the National Naval Aviation Museum can be found. Located north of downtown, UWF's main campus is where most students attend classes.

People who spoke the Muskogean language were the first to settle here. The Pensacola people were already established when Europeans first arrived in the area. Creek people often traveled to and traded in the areas that are now southern Alabama, Mississippi, and southeast Louisiana.

In 1559, the Spanish explorer Tristán de Luna established a community that quickly failed. Spanish colonizers erected a fortified settlement there in 1698, and the current city grew up around it.

As European nations fought for influence in North America, the region changed hands multiple times.
